The Response is the Key: Auditory Sensitivity
Auditory Sensitivity can be subtle or excruciating
In homeopathy, we don’t treat diagnoses or conditions, we support people.
That means two clients can share the same named symptom and still need very different support.
Take auditory sensitivity.
In both of the examples below, sound intolerance is connected to sensory sensitivity and nervous system overstimulation. But the response to that overstimulation can be very different.
Client One
• When overstimulated, there is a sense of total collapse
• Their thinking slows down
• The body feels depleted
• Even conversation becomes intolerable
• Noise of any kind, including being spoken to or hearing others talk, makes it difficult to think
• What helps is withdrawal, quiet, and both physical and mental rest in comfy pajamas
• There is no irritability, just a strong need to be alone and recover
This client needs the remedy Conium.
Client Two
• Responds in the opposite way
• Overstimulation leads to a state where will explode in anger from noise
• Sound amplifies their already overstimulated state, it’s intolerable
• Noises such as a ticking clock, voices, or traffic feel unbearable
• Can’t relax
• Maybe crave stimulants like coffee or alcohol – we see this in adults, but some kids love their caffeine too
• Has a hard time sleeping
• Driven, impatient temperament
• Feels better from work, having a project or activity that keeps them busy helps regulate the system – yet they will overwork
This client needs the remedy Nux vomica.
The name of the issue is the same. But the experience of that symptom by the person, their response, is different.
This is why homeopathy places such importance on the individual. How a person responds, adapts, and copes is essential.
