Is Homeopathy like Vaccination? Principles of Homeopathy
Someone recently queried if vaccines are not technically a form of homeopathy, “just mixed in with the other junk?” Here was my response, which I share as an opportunity for others to learn what homeopathy is and what makes it so different:
No, vaccines aren't a form of homeopathy just mixed with other junk. First, homeopathic remedies are prepared through a precise process of serial dilution and succussion - vigorous shaking between each step of dilution. Second, remedies undergo a systematic proving and a detailed record is made of how that substance affects a healthy person. That is the basis for our materia medica, alongside clinical observations. Third, the remedy must match the Similimum. Even in the case of homeoprophylaxis, the remedy is prepared according to homeopathic pharmacopoeia through dilution and succussion and it is selected on the basis of the Similimum and materia medica - always those things as the foundational principles of homeopathy.
Homeopathy fundamentally differs from vaccination because homeopathy operates across the planes of human experience - physical, mental, and emotional. The founder of homeopathy, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann himself, articulated this principle with clarity in The Organon, particularly in Aphorisms 210 through 230, which address diseases of mental and emotional levels. He recognized that the alteration of the mind and disposition is not incidental to healing; it is central to it. Every medicinal substance in the materia medica affects the mind in its own characteristic manner. As Hahnemann observed, the mental and emotional disturbances can actually suppress the physical symptoms, occupying the place of the corporeal disease entirely. Anyone who has experienced a stress headache or nervous stomachache understands this.
“It would seem as though the mind, in these cases, felt with uneasiness and grief the truth of these rational representations and acted upon the body as if it wished to restore the lost harmony, but that the body, by means of its disease, reacted upon the organs of the mind and disposition and put them in still greater disorder by a fresh transference of its sufferings on to them” (Organon aphorism §230).
Hahnemann's observation illustrates something fundamental: the mind and body are not separate entities. You are one being. The body and mind influence each other constantly. When the body suffers, the mind is affected. When the mind is distressed, the body responds. They are inseparable. Vaccination, by contrast, treats immunity as an isolated system - addressing the immune response while leaving the rest of you out of consideration. Homeopathy recognizes no such division. Homeopathy treats the human person as a whole, where mind, emotions, and body exist in continuous relationship with one another.
By contrast to homeopathy, vaccination operates solely upon the physical, particularly the immune system. It does not address the totality of the individual - their constitutional temperament, their psychological makeup, their emotional state, or their mental qualities. It is administered uniformly to populations without regard for the individualization that is central to homeopathic practice.
Homeopathy is therefore not merely a “diluted and succussed” version of vaccination, and neither is vaccination an example of homeopathic principle. They are fundamentally different systems operating on entirely different levels.
I appreciate genuine, thoughtful discussion. And I am conscious that it is difficult to unentangle ourselves from the allopathic thinking in which we have been totally immersed.
